If you ask anyone with ambition what it is that they want to strive for, you will more often than not, hear the word GREATNESS. Human beings relish the idea of being great, of making an impact on their community and beyond, of leaving a lasting legacy. Definitions of greatness may differ but they all have in common, the idea of influence, success, fame and leaving a lasting impression on the world for generations to come.
Not all of us can be as iconic as Nelson Mandela, Mother Theresa or Muhammed Ali, but we can all exert influence on ourselves, our families and communities to achieve greatness.
In the pursuit of GREATNESS there will always be obstacles to overcome. Indeed, the mark of great man or woman is that they faced obstacles in their lives but were able to thrive despite those obstacles. It is a common misconception that that truly successful people were just more fortunate from the beginning. They had the talent, the right circumstances of birth the looks, the money—everything they needed to succeed. We cannot discount the impact of these factors on the achievement of greatness. It is a fact that those from stable families who were not burdened by poverty or physical limitations certainly had it easier than those who had major obstacles to overcome. It is equally true that not all those with the right settings to succeed always achieve greatness. It is also a fact that countless people have gone on to reach unparalleled levels of success despite significant challenges in their lives. In a number of situations, it is the presence of those obstacles that have spared those individuals to seek and achieve greatness. Whatever their reasons for success are, we can certainly draw inspiration from the achievements of these people.
Whenever you are faced with a major obstacle in your endeavours, as you certainly will meet bumps along the road to success, consider that:
• Benjamin Franklin couldn’t afford to attend school after he turned 10;
• Oprah Winfrey was rapped and abused as at the age of 9.
• Franklin D Roosevelt lost the use of his legs to polio before becoming president of the United States of America;
• Walt Disney had attention deficit disorder;
The people listed above are ample proof that obstacles can be overcome. Greatness can be achieved despite overwhelming odds. Indeed, it is the inter action with those obstacles that shaped the characters of great men and women who have become legends in this world.
There will be bumps along the road to greatness. All you need is the right attitude towards those obstacles and greatness will be yours. Take time to cultivate the attitude of resilience, the zeal to confront obstacles head on and you leave a lasting legacy on your family, your community and even the whole world
