“Being the first to cross the finish line makes you a winner in only one phase of life. It’s what you do after you cross the line that really counts.”Dieter F. Uchtdorf
On September 2, 2018 I watched the Italian Grand Prix that took place in Monza, Italy. There were predictions as to who would win the race between Ferrari and Mercedes teams. There was speculation as to what this race would mean to the title aspirations of the leading formula 1 race drivers in the world, namely, Lewis Hamilton and Sebastian Vettel.
There is no doubt that before the race, the formula 1 drivers who took part had practiced for the race. There is no doubt too that during the practice sessions, the drivers noticed the areas of improvement and acted on them. The formula one drivers had managers who helped them identify area of improvement in their performance and drafted the possible strategies that would be employed during the race.
Before the race all teams had equal chances of winning. The conditions that obtained on the race course were the same for all the teams. The characters and mind sets of the drivers were not the same. All the drivers had the training to be able to win the race. There was a possibility of drivers of the different cars crashing against each other. Indeed, there was contact between Hamilton and Vettel’s cars and this was decisive on the outcome of the race. There was contact and both spun. The result was Vettel dropped to the back and could only recover to fourth. Sebastian Vettel, “undid all of his hard work in a matter of seconds. Rather than accepting Hamilton had pulled a good move on him, tucking in behind and then using his pace advantage to attempt to get back through, Vettel tried to give his title rival the squeeze – and ended up the loser”.
The Italian Grand Prix was run over a number of laps on the circuit. Those drivers who were at the rear had an equal chance of overtaking the leaders. In the race at Monza, the Ferrari team were the favourites to win the race and yet, it was Mercedes who eventually won. There were a number of rally drivers on the race, yet the spotlight was on Lewis Hamilton and Sebastian Vettel.
It is obvious that all the rally drivers wanted to win. They had their sights on the finishing line. Whatever happened during the race the result that counted was who, got to the finishing line first. People were not worried about the starting line. The comments that came from journalists and other formula one drivers came after the eventual winner had crossed the finish line. This shows the importance of the finishing line.
There are striking similarities between life and a formula1 race. There are similarities between life and the Italian Grand Prix that was run on 2 September 2018. As with the Italian Grand Prix, life is made up of many laps. As in the formula 1 race, there are a number of participants in life, all of whom have an equal chance of success at the beginning. In life as in a Formula 1 race, there are opportunities to use the services of mentors and coaches to improve chances of success. As in a grand Prix, in life, the important part is the finishing line.
As you run your race, this race called life, are you focusing on the finishing line?
