Food wastage has become one of the world’s worst threats to the environment, as food that winds up in trash bins as well as in landfills, produce a toxin called methane. Methane is a powerful greenhouse gas that is more potent than carbon dioxide. Methane is also a primary contributor to the formation of ground level ozone layer (a protective thin layer covering the earth’s stratosphere that absorbs the sun’s harmful rays) and ultimately, methane is also a contributor to our climate change as it is one of the causes of global warming.
Food wastage is not only hazardous to our environment, but it is also unethical considering the level of poverty and food insecurity in many parts of the world. Initiatives have been put in place to create awareness and to facilitate change.
Tekeya is an example of a brilliant way to eradicate the culture of food wastage in Egypt and is now being set in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Tekeya is an application that serves as an online store for food outlets to sell their surplus food for people to buy at a cheaper price. “We serve to help restaurants, grocery stores, hotels, and other food industries to sell their fresh and intact surplus food for people to buy, rather than unethically throwing it out,” says award winning founder of the app, Menna Shahin. You can either have your purchased food delivered directly to your address or you can opt to fetch it from the store.
On the topic of business organizations that serve to resolve socio-political issues, Menna Shahin is also the founder of She Travels, which is an online platform that serves as a travel and educational academy for women in Egypt. She Travels is purposed to empower Egyptian women by teaching them about their rights and inspiring them to build themselves as entrepreneurs. The academy also serves to offer tourist guide information for women who travel, informing them about places that are safe to travel to and ultimately, the organization has motivated women to travel more and to be inspired by the knowledge of knowing that they are guided, throughout. She travels serves to emancipate women.
