Born in Kenya, Sonia Kaiser is a student who is studying a BA – Strategic Brand Communications at Vega (Cape Town Campus) who is passionate about preserving, learning cultures and people’s customs, no matter what shade you are.

I have always been fascinated by concepts regarding creating, building and sustaining. Therefore, l saw an opportunity and I had an ambition and desire to own a business that promotes African cultural practices, business that will earn me a profit while promoting and showcasing African art.
Most people are not sure when they should venture into entrepreneurship, how did you know it was time at a very young age?
Baskets are appealing to wide social and demographical groups. They have a lot of potential that has not been fully tapped into. Also, I wanted to contribute to putting African basket stories on the map and glorify the hard work that goes into weaving them. I did my research and I identified my market and realized that the product is in constant demand, this was the right time! Confirmation came from how the media now portrays African goods, art, communities and relation in a more positive, uplifting light. Not that I needed validation but the immense interest has been encouraging. For example, Coming to America 2, Marvels’ : Black Panther, Musicians such as Davido, Burna Boy. Where do Suraya baskets originate from?
Suraya baskets epitomize AFRICA culture. They are from different cultures across Africa. What’s interesting about them is that you can find a common denominator in the way the items are made. The methodology, their use and the way each community in Africa is linked to each other.
Who are your ideal customers?
Homemakers, tourist, families, new homeowners and business (corporate space), home staging companies, design and décor companies, home and décor stores. Young and old. People from all demographics and social groups.
What challenges have you faced since you started your business?
Being a student, studying and creating time for work has been challenging. One needs to understand the importance of time management, being disciplined and focused. Other challenges have been financing, entering the saturated market, creating a presence in the market and creating long-lasting relationships with customers. Covid19 also had a big play.
How do you plan on scaling your business?
From creating a strategic presence online, and offline that leaves a memorable experience on my customers. Creating substance and sustainability through our products and organization that is effective and worthwhile and leading to profit. I am also currently looking for funding. I am aiming for a gradual, steady, growth.
How do you stay focused and motivated?
I get motivation from my products that communicate a lot of stories to many homes and the positive response I get from customers. I enjoy getting imagery of clients home décor containing our items.. This also helps other homemakers to get ideas on how to renovate their homes and living spaces.

Any advice to those that would like to venture into arts and crafts?
You need to be passionate, disciplined, and determined, tell yourself, no matter how tough it gets, I’m going to make it. Don’t stop running. You got this!!
